Hi there, my husband n I are insured under UHC normal health insurance coverage ( no dental). Now my husband wants to get braces for his teeth. How much does it cost? and is it possible for me to upgrade my United Healthcare plan to dental insurance also and would they cover the cost for the braces??And when I go for an upgrade, do I have to mention that I want to get braces done and hence I m applying for the upgrade in the insurance plan? Plzz help me..

The premium plans cost a fortune, the affordable plans only cover cleanings and a small percentage of procedures. Either way, when you add up the total price….cost of plan + out of pocket at time of service, it seems to come out fairly close to what you would pay if you paid cash at the time of service.

Is there a practial reason for a self employed guy to buy dental insurance? If anyone knows of a good Dental Plan that is actually worth the cost of premiums in West Michigan, please post.
I think some of you missed the idea. The average cost of a family dental plan is over 100 a month, that covers basic cleanings and about 1/2 of dental work (cavity filling, root canal, extraction, etc), and no orthodonic work.

for $1200-$1400 a year, I can pay as I go with cash. There would have to be a lot of oral injuries/emergencies to offset the actual cost of insurance.

I don’t know, Medical costs can obviously have no end, so medical insurance is a necessity. Dental costs are finite. One or two cleanings a year, possibly a couple cavities to fill for the family. Perhaps cash as you go is the best for dental coverage.

Probably depends on how good of shape your teeth are. If you have had a lot of work done already and foresee more in the future, then they might be a good deal. Personally, I have had like 3 cavities in 32 years, so I don’t bother with it. If you get a Health Savings Account plan for your health insurance, you can use that money to pay for your dental checkups and at least get the benefit of using pre-tax money.

I am looking for the best dental insurance plan in California that is not a dental discount plan. Please do not respond to me if you are going to try and sell me a discount plan. Thank you

I'm in need of braces and other ortho/protho work, but need help with paying. Besides office payment plans, what options might I have ?

My father's company insurance plan will no longer cover me as a dependent. I need to find some sort of dental/health insurance of my own. My status is as follows:

I live in NY
My parents live in NJ
I am self-employed out of MD
My father claims me as a dependent on his taxes
I am presently a part-time student…and will be a full-time student in Fall 2008.

What can I do with this…to make something happen? LORD Z: Your cost benefit analysis is correct, but my mother wants to insure for the 'what ifs…'

Check with your University. They probably have an affordable healthcare plan or if you want to gamble set up your own medical savings account and pay for your bills cash. Most doctors will give you a discount of like 25% for not having to do any paperwork. Actuarialists will tell you that insurance is a joke until you hit 42 when the incidents of claims begin to rise. Up until then they are making money off of you for nothing. Calculate what you spend for drugs and doctor's appointments without insurance versus what you pay for insurance plus co pay and what you learn is that you pay more for insurance than you do for drugs and doctors visits. But then again, if you find out that I am wrong in your case, check out the University or get another job solely for the insurance. Personal insurance is a ripoff. Group insurance is the way to go. The University qualifies as a group.
